July 20, 2009 - Lot 16 to Close, Partial Closing of Lot 70.

University of Arkansas parking lot 16 and the north half of lot 70, both located east of the Dickson Street Annex, will be closed on July 20, 2009 for construction of the Nanoscience Technology Building. This loss of parking will permanently change the availability of parking in the southeast portion of campus, where there is no additional land on which to construct more parking.

We expect the few remaining spaces in lot 70 will be changed to Reserved parking. Additional motorcycle and scooter parking will be added to the southeast section of lot 71.

For those displaced by these changes we suggest consideration of the following options that are listed in order of cost:

1. Purchase a Remote permit for $3.95 a month. Remote parking is available in the southeast section of lot 56 (northeast corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Razorback Road). From there, the Green route bus serves Union Station (next to the Student Union) and the Bough Commons bus stop. The Green route serves this lot every 10 minutes from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and every 30 minutes from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters. You can also ride Route 56 to the Harmon Avenue Garage, the bus stop at the corner of Harmon and Dickson, or the stop at the corner of Dickson and Duncan Ave. Route 56 serves this lot every 20 minutes from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer, when Razorback Transit is on Reduced Service routes, the Green reduced route serves this lot every 30 minutes from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Resident Student Reserved lots around Yocum, Humphreys, Gregson and Gibson Halls are also open for Remote permit parking in the summer.

2. Purchase a Faculty/Staff permit for $8.08 or $10.45 a month, depending on your annual salary. Based on your direction of travel and the location of your campus office, seek parking in one of the following lots:

Lot 15 on Arkansas Avenue or 15A east of the Phoenix House with access from Greg Street.
Lot 53 at the West Avenue Annex (on the Brown bus route with a bus every 20 minutes 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters and every 30 minutes on the Green Reduced route during the summer).
Lots 10, 14, or 14A on the corner of Arkansas Avenue and Maple Street;or lots 31, 31N, 35, 35N, 38, or 39 along Douglas Street.

We expect lot 55, directly east of the outdoor track, will be changed predominately to Faculty/Staff later this summer. This lot will contain approximately the same number of employee spaces that are being displaced in lots 16 and 70.

Razorback Transit Route 56 will serve lot 55 when classes start in the fall. After leaving lot 55, the bus will stop at Pomfret Hall on Stadium Drive, travel up the hill via California to the Harmon Avenue Garage stop, then stop at Harmon and Dickson, again at Duncan and Dickson, then proceed south on Duncan Street and Hill Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., to lot 56 and back to Lot 55. Route 56 serves this lot every 20 minutes from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters. The Pomfret Express route will also serve this lot every 12 minutes from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters. This route stops at Union Station (next to the Arkansas Union) and Brough Commons. It does not serve any stops east of Garland Avenue, but will return passengers to lot 55 quicker than Route 56. During the summer, when Razorback Transit is on Reduced Service routes, the Green reduced route serves the Track bus stop on Razorback Road every 30 minutes from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This is the closest stop to lot 55. Resident Student Reserved lots around Yocum, Humphreys, Gregson and Gibson Halls are also open for Faculty/Staff parking in the summer.

3. Purchase a Reserved permit for lots 70 or 71 on a space available basis for $38.01 a month.

4. Consider the Underwood’s Garage where special arrangements have been made with Parking Systems of America for a limited amount of employee and student parking. The normal cost for these spaces is $75 a month. University employees and students may rent parking in this facility for $38 a month. If you are interested in parking in this facility, please contact Erik Ward at (469)628-7771 or erik@belclaire.com. The Razorback Transit Brown route serves this garage every 20 minutes between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters with stops at the Train Depot and on Dickson at University Avenue. The Green Reduced route serves the same stops 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters and 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the summer.

5. Purchase a Harmon Avenue Garage permit for $51.82 a month.

Reserved parking permits may be purchased by completing a Reserved Permit Application available on the Transit and Parking website, http://parking.uark.edu. An on-line application that can be completed and submitted by email is available at http://parking.uark.edu/215.htm. An application that can be completed on-line and printed is available at http://parking.uark.edu/reservedParkingPermitApplication.pdf.

Harmon Avenue Garage permits may be purchased at the Harmon Avenue Garage between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or at the Transit and Parking Department in the Administrative Services Building between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Please send any suggestions or questions you have about parking to me. As the campus continues to implement the Campus Master Plan with infill buildings in the campus core, additional surface spaces will be displaced. We are continuously looking for options to improve transportation and parking consistent with our campus sustainability goals and remain open to all suggestions.
